MIP Program

State Approved Alcohol & Drug Education Program for Minors

Who Should Take the Class

Behavioral Clinical Services provides state approved MIP classes. This class is for persons who are under the age of 21, who have received citations for alcohol or drug related offenses. Upon completion of the course, the participant is presented with a Completion Certificate.

Among persons aged 18- to 22-years old, 18 percent of full-time undergraduates were heavy drinkers compared with 12 percent of those who were not full-time undergraduates. Rates of heavy alcohol use were higher for both men and women who were full-time undergraduates compared with other persons aged 18 to 22.

Among young adults aged 18 to 25, the rate of past month illicit drug use was higher with increasing levels of past month alcohol use. Among heavy drinkers, 44 percent had used illicit drugs in the past month compared with 26 percent of "binge" drinkers (persons who had five or more drinks on the same occasion at least once in the past month), 11 percent of nonbinge drinkers, and 5 percent of nondrinkers. This association between heavy drinking and illicit drug use was found for marijuana as well as for illicit drugs other than marijuana.

Offenses by a Minor

  • Purchase of alcohol or drugs
  • Attempt to purchase alcohol
  • Consumption of alcohol or drugs
  • Misrepresentation of age
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Possession of alcohol or drugs

All young people can benefit from the knowledge gained in this program, not just those charged with alcohol related offenses.

Course Outline

The course consists of a 12 hour program and is presented in six 2-hour sessions. It contains information about alcohol advertising that appeals to young people, effects on motor skills, accidents related to alcohol, symptoms of alcohol problems, laws, and decision-making.

It is hoped that by being involved in this course young people will not "graduate" to more serious offenses related to alcohol (DUI, for example).

We will also be providing a 6 session extended education program along with the regular sessions to help avoid a future pattern of alcohol or drug use that will cover:

  • Meth Usage
  • Marijuana Usage
  • Club Drugs
  • Binge Drinking
  • Tobacco
  • Prescription Drugs
